NACLO 2019 (C) Here in One Hand
We do the problem "Here in One Hand" for NACLO 2019 (North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad), a competition for high-schoolers in North America.
This problem was hard, to be honest. As a linguist, I had to make several assumptions about the number system to even break into the problem. It's not straightforward.

    Although you've said it is simpler to use "or" for the words 'unless' and 'either', it breaks a rule of semantics: the meanings are not the same anymore! "Either I leave or you leave" breaks down in the following: P: "I leave"; Q: "You leave". Operator: we don't know. P ? Q Given the proposition: If I leave, then you can't leave. If you leave, then I can't leave. We can translate that into: P <-> ~Q => P xor Q It's an exclusive disjunction operator at the end, not just an disjunction! The same argument can be constructed for the proposition, "I will leave unless you leave."

    • @Trevtutor
      @Trevtutor 3 дня назад

      The exclusive disjunction is only ever implied, not entailed, in English unless “but not both” is *explicitly* stated. e.g. You’ve created additional constraints on the word “either” that aren’t inherently present in the word in order to get the exclusive interpretation. “Either 1+1=2 or 2+2=4” is a truthful sentence to most speakers, so exclusivity doesn’t exist by default in the word.

    • @sekaibelle
      @sekaibelle 3 дня назад

      @@Trevtutor I've seen a few explications that logicians have chosen "either ... or" to mean inclusive disjunction out of conventionality at the time, so I guess you're right when limiting semantics to the field itself. But in everyday language, including books, I see less and less this same meaning being applied; thus my commentary. As of now, I believe it's helpful to include more words so that the meaning can be inferred correctly at the end: - "If either A or B..." : inclusive; - "Select either A or B..." : exclusive. Since this a linguistic issue, we will eventually redefine and no progress will be lost.

    Dear @trev tutor, thank you for your good work. It's super amazing to learn English grammar through your video lessons. During my schooling, I struggled a lot with English as a subject. Due to lack of good resources back then, I couldn't learn it the best. I scored lowest among all subjects I studied. Unfortunately, I narrowly missed securing distinction aggregate marks in my secondary. Now that it's an opportunity for me to clear concepts. Thank you again.
